Youth and Young Adults

Lowcountry CoC has been selected as a YHDP Community. The Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) is designed to reduce the number of youth experiencing homelessness. The goal of the YHDP is to support selected communities, including rural, suburban, and urban areas across the United States, in the development and implementation of a coordinated community approach to preventing and ending youth homelessness.

Who is the Youth Action Board?

The Youth Action Board (YAB) is a committee of the Lowcountry CoC composed of 4-10 members between the ages of 18 and 24 with lived experience of homelessness or housing instability. The YAB uses their expertise to be an agent of change, providing impactful feedback to the CoC on policies and actions that impact youth. The YAB aspires to use their stories to inform the public about the realities of youth homelessness and to inspire other young people in the Lowcountry.

Responsibilities include:

  • Be a part of a team that understands your experience

  • Expanding housing options for youth, including rapid re-housing

  • Ensure youth needs are met through the CoC’s Coordinated Entry system

  • Educate your peers with lived experience about their rights and resources in the area

If you are interested in joining the YAB, please fill out the form and Shameka Conyers, Program Director at One80 Place, will reach out.

Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP)

In 2023, our community was awarded a $3.8m grant from the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program(YHDP), a program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Since then, Lowcountry CoC has worked collaboratively with the community to formulate a plan of how to address youth homelessness in the Lowcountry. We will be releasing our Community Care Plan on addressing youth homelessness in Fall 2025.
